The new solution will allow EU citizens to verify their age online while protecting privacy and limiting personal data disclosure. This advances the EU’s digital strategy, which requires member states to implement digital identity wallets by 2026, following the European Commission’s adoption of technical standards for cross-border digital identity wallets.
The age verification system will provide access to age-restricted services without sharing unnecessary personal data, ensure accessibility for users with disabilities, meet EU privacy standards, integrate with existing digital services, and give users control over their personal data sharing.
Konstantin Papaxanthis, CEO of Scytáles, noted the solution’s importance for the Commission’s Better Internet for Kids (BIK+) strategy and simplifying EU citizens’ digital interactions, adding that the EUDI Wallet will more broadly “streamline the daily digital interactions of EU citizens and businesses.”
Deutsche Telekom’s T-Systems CEO Ferri Abolhassan explained how the technology will strengthen digital sovereignty and enable passwordless authentication for online services.
“With secure digital identities, we are now restoring digital sovereignty to EU citizens and ensuring greater protection for minors,” he said. “When we go online, we have little control over how our personal data is used by websites and stores. Now the technology confirms that someone really is who they say they are. An easy login without passwords for online citizen services, banking transactions, or travel – simple and secure.”
The Digital Europe Programme-funded project extends current initiatives. Deutsche Telekom is testing digital identities for mobile phone card activation in several European countries. The company’s IT division, T-Systems, has also won contracts to provide digital identities for German health insurers AOK and Barmer, serving more than 50 percent of Germany’s statutory health insurance recipients.
This development comes after the release of new payment integration specifications by the EU Digital Wallet Consortium, showing ongoing progress in the EU’s digital identity infrastructure development.
