Delta Airlines has expanded its Digital ID touchless airport technology to Salt Lake City International Airport (SLC), marking the sixth major hub to implement the biometric system designed to streamline security processes.
The Digital ID program, which uses facial matching technology developed in partnership with the Transportation Security Administration (TSA), allows eligible passengers to move through airport checkpoints without showing physical identification documents. According to Delta’s operational data, the system has reduced bag drop processing times from two minutes to approximately 30 seconds—a 75 percent improvement in efficiency.
The implementation builds on Delta’s initial biometric screening program launched in 2021, which has since processed over 3.5 million passengers across its network. The system enables passengers to access dedicated TSA PreCheck Touchless ID lanes, where automated verification has reduced processing times from 20-25 seconds to 7-10 seconds compared to standard TSA PreCheck procedures.
Salt Lake City joins a growing network of airports utilizing Delta’s biometric system, following successful deployments at Atlanta (ATL), Detroit (DTW), Los Angeles (LAX), New York (JFK), and LaGuardia (LGA). The airline has confirmed plans to extend the service to Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport (DCA) in November 2024, with additional expansions planned for 2025.
The expansion comes as competing airlines and airports develop similar systems. CLEAR’s biometric verification service is now available at several major U.S. airports, while the TSA continues to expand its own biometric screening capabilities.
To participate in Delta’s Digital ID program, passengers must meet several eligibility requirements: active TSA PreCheck membership, Delta SkyMiles enrollment, stored passport information, a Known Traveler Number in their Delta profile, and the Fly Delta mobile app on their device. The system complies with the TSA’s upcoming REAL ID requirements, scheduled to take effect May 7, 2025.
