Delta Air Lines’ biometric experiment at the Reagan Washington National Airport (DCA) has entered into its second phase, allowing passengers to replace their boarding passes with a fingerprint scan.
It’s an expansion of a trial program first launched a couple of months ago, when Delta announced it was working with biometric screening specialist CLEAR to let Delta SkyMiles Members access the Delta Sky Club via fingerprint scan. Now, eligible Delta SkyMiles Members can enroll with CLEAR to extend the functionality to boarding.
In a statement, Delta COO Gil West said that after the pilot testing, “customers throughout our domestic network could start seeing this capability in a matter of months”, adding that phase one of the project prompted “extremely encouraging” feedback from participating customers and employees.
Delta has also been working with the US Customs and Border Protection agency to trial biometric security screening at JFK International Airport. As for DCA, the company says the final phase of the project will see biometric identification tied to baggage checking.
