Czech Border Police have expanded a biometric eGate program at Prague’s Václav Havel airport. Having initially installed the first automated border control gates back in 2011, secunet was contracted to add an extra ten, all of which were added over the last two weeks.
In partnership with Czech Republic-based Vitkovice IT Solutions, secunet installed the eGates, itself providing all the infrastructure, from the bioserver to the Terminal Control Center. It has also committed to providing maintenance services for at least the next few years.
In a statement, CBP National Border Situation Centre head Petr Malovec explained that secunet’s technology has already proven itself in warranting the expansion. “By choosing the solution from VITSOL/secunet we will continue using a tried and tested system,” he said, “allowing us to offer our international guests state-of-the-art technology and a high level of security.”
Malovec also pointed out that the Czech eGate system is based on the German EasyPASS border control project, which also contracted secunet to deploy eGates, and “has proven its worth with four million passenger crossings up to July 2015.”
Notably, the Czech Republic is part of the European Commission, which has been actively looking to develop the best biometric border security systems, most recently with a pilot project at the Lisbon International Airport. Going forward, secunet’s deployments may also have something to contribute in the EC’s deliberations, especially if the expansion of eGates at the Václav Havel airport proves as successful as the initial run.
