Cyprus has initiated applications for its new National Electronic Identity (eID) system, known as IDMe.cy, marking a significant step in the country’s digital transformation efforts. The application process opened today, and is available to Cypriot citizens aged 18 and above who possess a Biometric Identity Card.
The implementation of this national digital ID system represents part of Cyprus’s broader strategy to align with the European Union’s eIDAS regulations, which establish standards for electronic identification and trust services across the EU. The system is designed to be fully compatible with the upcoming European Digital Identity Wallet framework, enabling cross-border identity verification and secure access to public services throughout the EU.
While the application phase has commenced, Cyprus is implementing the system through a phased rollout approach. The government has introduced early adoption incentives to encourage citizen participation, though specific deployment stages and timelines remain flexible to accommodate technical integration requirements and user feedback.
The digital ID system incorporates advanced security features aligned with ETSI standards and the latest NIST Digital Identity Guidelines. Key functionalities include qualified electronic signatures, secure authentication for government services, and integration with existing national identity infrastructure. The system supports both mobile and web-based access, enabling citizens to verify their identity and access services across multiple platforms.
Integration with Cyprus’s current identity verification infrastructure involves connecting the new eID system with existing government databases and services. This integration ensures seamless operation with legacy systems while providing enhanced security features such as multi-factor authentication and biometric verification capabilities.
The system is designed to support various digital government services, including access to healthcare records, tax services, and social security benefits, while ensuring compliance with EU data protection regulations and privacy standards.
Cyprus’s eID system also incorporates modern authentication protocols, including OpenID Connect and FIDO2 standards, enabling secure integration with both public and private sector services. This technical foundation ensures long-term compatibility with emerging digital identity technologies while maintaining high security standards for citizen data protection.
