CyberLink has attained the highest ranking in the Video Convenience category of the recent Face Analysis Technology Evaluation (FATE) tests conducted by the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST). In the evaluation, the performance of 82 passive, software-based presentation attack detection (PAD) algorithms was assessed, with CyberLink’s FaceMe emerging at the top of all three data sets within the Convenience category.
The FATE program by NIST segments its PAD testing into two categories: convenience and security. In the convenience track, the True Acceptance Rate (TAR) is set at 99 percent, and competitors are ranked based on their True Rejection Rate (TRR). FaceMe achieved a 100 percent True Rejection Rate in three different video tests, successfully thwarting all presentation attacks while maintaining the specified TAR.
Passive PAD merely requires the individual to present themselves to the camera, as opposed to active PAD, which requires additional actions like speaking or head turning for liveness verification. Common tactics employed in presentation attacks include holding up a printed photo, displaying a video from a smartphone, or wearing silicone masks. Liveness detection aims to prevent false positives that could lead to fraudulent activities.
Jau Huang, Chairman and CEO of CyberLink, commented on the results stating, “Facial recognition does not work if it can be easily fooled.” He added that significant resources have been invested to ensure robust presentation attack detection capabilities in FaceMe, a fact now corroborated by the NIST evaluation results.
The FATE program is an offshoot of NIST’s initiative to split its Face Recognition Vendor Test (FRVT) into two distinct evaluation programs: the Face Recognition Technology Evaluation (FRTE) and FATE. While FRTE focuses on algorithms involving image processing and analysis, FATE is centered on identity verification. The division is aimed at distinguishing facial recognition technologies from other face biometrics technologies not used for biometric matching, thereby offering a clearer perspective to those outside the biometrics industry.
CyberLink’s performance in the FATE PAD testing sheds light on the ongoing evaluations and advancements in the field of facial recognition technology, particularly in the realm of liveness detection and presentation attack mitigation. The top ranking of FaceMe in the Video Convenience category underscores the evolving landscape of passive PAD algorithms and their role in bolstering the security and reliability of facial recognition systems.
