COVID-19 Tracking ‘Web Process’ to Feature Biometric Tech

Ottawa-based SmartCone Technologies says it has an answer for getting people back to work and school amid the COVID-19 pandemic. The company has announced Symp2pass, an AI system designed to help end users check themselves for COVID-19 symptoms and to map safe and relatively dangerous spaces through crowdsourced data.

SmartCone is known for its eponymous, modular smart device solution that essentially allows users to stack different sensor components together. But Symp2pass is based on a different technology set called the “Safe Spaces AI engine”, licensed from Idea Capital Safe Spaces Corp.

In a statement, SmartCone framed Symp2pass as “the most comprehensive biometric based back to work, school and play web process available”, adding that it is compatible with any mobile device or computer. The company hasn’t yet specified which biometric modalities it supports, nor what purpose they serve; but it emphasized the solution’s use of “unsupervised AI learning” that allows the system to teach itself about what areas are safe and what may pose a higher risk of COVID-19 transmission.

The solution will be designed for use in conjunction with SmartCone’s own core technologies, the company says.

“Symp2pass will support every person to continually monitor their own health and use their personal map to find those safe spaces to visit,” explained Idea Capital Safe Spaces Corp. CEO Richard Harris in a statement announcing the solution. “Businesses will identify themselves as Symp2pass sites and use the SmartCone Kiosk as the monitoring system ensuring they remain a safe space.”

SmartCone says the Symp2pass solution will become available around the world “within the next few weeks.”
