Coppernic Uses Innovatrics Algorithms to Improve Performance of Biometric Handhelds

Innovatrics will be supplying Coppernic with biometric algorithms to improve the performance of the latter’s biometric capture devices. Coppernic is best known for manufacturing rugged handhelds that are built to perform well in adverse environmental conditions.

The Innovatrics algorithms are highly efficient, and will help optimize battery life while Coppernic’s devices are in the field. They will also improve the quality of the biometric data being gathered, and ensure that that data can be trusted when it needs to be referenced for other applications. For example, a fingerprint captured with a Coppernic handheld could be used to verify a voter’s identity when they go to the polls during an election. However, that person (a legal voter) could be turned away if the original template was captured poorly.

Coppernic’s devices are marketed primarily toward law enforcement and coast guard organizations. They can be used to capture both faces and fingerprints, with Innovatrics supplying the algorithms for both forms of biometric identification. The two companies noted that Coppernic tests its devices in harsh (and specific) environments, such as high seas (for the coast guard) to make sure that its handhelds can meet the needs of any client.

“For optimal results, a good user interface and device design are of utmost importance,” said Coppernic CMO Rob Vandervecht. “Working with enforcement agencies such as the Czech Police or the US Coast Guard, several proofs-of-concept and pilot phases helped us understand the critical aspects and user needs of each use case, even in extreme circumstances.”

The Coppernic handhelds can be linked to a broader biometric database, though they are also capable of on-device authentication and registration. That utility allows them to function in areas with poor connectivity.

Innovatrics has demoing Coppernic handhelds at booth 5.2 D017 at this week’s Trustech 2021 event in Paris, which runs until December 2. The company recently released a new enrollment app to enable mobile data collection. In terms of hardware, previous Coppernic devices have featured Suprema’s BM-Slim3 FAP 30 fingerprint sensor module.
