Computer Vision Specialist Joins COVID-19-focused Innovation Program

Toronto-based Patriot One Technologies has gained entry into a major, government-funded innovation program for technologies that could help to mitigate the COVID-19 pandemic, the company has announced.

The Canadian Digital Technology Supercluster COVID-19 Program is funded through the Ministry of Innovation, Science and Economic Development’s Innovation Supercluster Initiative. Its aim is to bring together various companies, research organizations, and academic institutions to work on technologies for digital transformation, with the COVID-19 Program in particular aimed at helping to build resiliency in the healthcare system.

For Patriot One, participation in the program means up to $4.5 million in co-investment funding for a two-stage development program. The company says its work will focus on the development and deployment of a thermal screening system, AI systems that can detect the presence of medical and non-medical face masks as well as social distancing compliance, and “cross-location temperature monitoring to help the prediction of future outbreaks based on the overall trending and the combination of quantifiable indicators,” as Patriot One explained in a statement.

Stage One could bring up to $2.25 million in investment for initial development and deployments of the technologies, while Stage Two would potentially bring another $2.25 million for their refinement.

Patriot One says that these “Health & Safety modules” will be integrated into its PATSCAN Multi-Sensor Threat Detection Platform, which is also designed to detect weapons and disturbances such as physical altercations. Meanwhile, its engineering team has also been working on a similar solution called PATSCAN Multi-Sensor Gateway, which seeks to use AI technology developed by XTRACT.ai to enhance its overall performance. The company expects the solution to become commercially available in August, with trial deployments potentially starting the month before.
