ComplyCube, a London-based AI company specializing in identity verification, has unveiled its new “Age Estimation” tool designed to assess an individual’s age using biometric and liveness detection technology. The tool is intended as an alternative for businesses requiring a lower level of identity assurance compared to traditional age verification methods that match users to their photo IDs.
The Age Estimation system leverages advanced biometric technology to provide reliable age estimates within seconds, based on a single selfie. The algorithm, which has been tested for bias, also examines the selfie for liveness signals to thwart presentation attacks such as screen replays, 3D masks, and deepfakes.
“Our multi-step pipeline and data-centric approach have enabled us to tackle ethnic, genetic, age, and gender variance to provide our clients with a fair and robust age estimation,” said Harry Varatharasan, Chief Data Scientist of ComplyCube.
In addition to its core functionality, the service incorporates privacy-by-design features, including configurable automatic redaction for selfies. This allows businesses to customize the service according to jurisdictional regulations or specific use cases, making it ideal for global age-gating while adding an extra layer of protection against spoofing.
The launch comes at a time when concerns are escalating over the ease with which minors can access inappropriate digital content. A recent UK-based study revealed that 23 percent of minors can easily bypass VPN limitations, and another study indicated that 56 percent of children aged 11 to 16 have encountered explicit material online. These statistics underscore the need for more robust age-verification measures, especially in light of the UK’s newly passed “Online Safety Bill,” which mandates age verification processes for online publishers.
ComplyCube’s Age Estimation tool could be particularly relevant in the UK, where the Online Safety Bill has stirred controversy over its implications for end-to-end encryption on messaging platforms. The company has been actively enhancing its identity verification solutions, as evidenced by its recent upgrade to detect “screen replay attacks” in its Document Authentication service.
