Tokyo’s Haneda Airport has partnered with Collins Aerospace to streamline its passenger processing procedures. The company has outfitted the airport with dozens of biometric self-service terminals, and supplied mobile screening technology to enable a contactless passenger experience.
The centerpiece of the deal is Collins’ ARINC SelfPass biometric system, which uses facial recognition to link a passenger to their travel documents. The solution reduces the amount of contact between travelers and airport staff, since they can pass through checkpoints with a facial recognition scan and no longer need to present documents to an employee.
The Haneda installation also offers support for Collins’ new Kiosk Connect solution. Kiosk Connect debuted in September, and allows passengers to use their own smartphones to check-in and drop their bags when they arrive at the airport. Travelers do not need to download an app in order to use the system, and can instead scan a QR code to interact with a self-service kiosk via public Wi-Fi. As a result, customers that use Kiosk Connect will no longer need to touch any shared terminals to complete their airport journey.
The full project includes 98 check-in kiosks, 42 biometric self-boarding gates, 30 biometric enrollment kiosks, and 17 biometric security gates, with an additional 104 biometric devices for the bag drop station. Those kiosks have been integrated with Haneda’s Face Express system, which utilizes facial recognition technology from NEC and was trialed at Haneda and Narita airports in April of this year.
“Our ARINC SelfPass biometrics solution at Tokyo Haneda Airport streamlines passenger processing while improving airport efficiency and security,” said Collins Airport Systems VP Rakan Khaled. “Despite the challenging pandemic environment, we were able to manage staffing and suppliers to ensure smooth delivery of the solution.”
SelfPass was previously deployed at McCarran Airport in Las Vegas back in 2019. The Haneda installation reflects the growing interest in contactless screening solutions in the wake of COVID-19.
