Cognitec Upgrades Facial Scanning Software

Facial recognition technology developer Cognitec has announced a major upgrade to its B9 software engine. That technology is powering the company’s FaceVACS-DBScan product, which will now be more powerful with the improved algorithm.

The company says that the upgrade is a product of intensive R&D in the area of low-resolution image scanning, and the scanning of images taken in more problematic environments. Cognitec says the upgrade has also improved the accuracy of scans of non-frontal poses.

FaceVACS-DBScan allows users to compare facial image scans against various databases for a match – a useful tool in a number of applications. It’s no wonder that last year, having won praise from NIST (the National Institute of Standards and Technology), the Cognitec went on to sign a partnership with Intel to further develop its technology for a number of consumer electronics applications. The company has also developed a mobile tool (called the Mobile Examiner) for law enforcement that provides the same kind of functionality from a mobile device, allowing them to scan faces and search against mug shots in the field.
