Cognitec Solution Helps Secure Macau Casinos

Some major casinos in Macau are now using facial recognition technology to alert security when banned individuals enter their premises.

The technology was provided to Melco Crown Entertainment by Cognitec, a facial biometrics specialist, which helped to deploy its FaceVACS-VideoScan solution on-site. The system scans faces appearing on live video streams and matches them against the images of banned individuals stored in the casinos databases, all in real-time, with alerts sent to security staff as soon as any such persons are detected.

It’s a system with which Melco Crown Entertainment is already very pleased, with Surveillance Operations Executive Director Leroy Daniel preparing a presentation on the system, entitled “How we got facial recognition to work”, for the World Game Protection Conference later this month. “By working closely with Cognitec and through a process of internal research, experimentation and analysis, we have found a tipping point,” he said in a press release.

Cognitec is also going to present on the solution at that same event, offering a live demonstration of its technology. The company entered into a partnership with IT heavyweight Intel a little over a year ago, and its success with Melco should help to further burnish its reputation and appeal going forward.
