Cognitec Delivers Biometric License Renewal for Dutch Drivers

Facial recognition specialist Cognitec has been contracted to deliver a cutting-edge system for driver’s license renewal in the Netherlands.

The contract comes by way of RDW, the country’s vehicle authority, and entails the delivery of a digital application that uses Cognitec’s biometric technology to match a driver’s newly updated photo to the one on file in the Central Driving License Register. In addition to performing the biometric matching, Cognitec’s system also ensures that the uploaded photos match ISO/IEC standards for biometric images.

Cognitec says the system is already operational in 15 municipalities in the Netherlands, and that it will reach 15 additional municipalities this year, reaching almost 25 percent of the country’s residents.

Commenting on the program in a statement, RDW Senior Project Manager Gert Jan de Nijs explained that his team “have been using face recognition for more than a year to increase the overall quality of the license renewal process, and have just begun to apply the deduplication capabilities of the Cognitec system,” adding that the technology helps to ensure the quality of the Central Driving License Register database. “We are excited to move toward a fully secure, convenient digital process that provides our citizens with a future-proof ID management system.”

Going forward, the Netherlands’ Ministry of Infrastructure and Water Management will evaluate the biometric system next year to determine whether it offers a basis for a national service that could eliminate the need for citizens to go to city hall for driver license renewal, a potentially big future project for Cognitec if its technology continues to prove successful.
