Checkr Launches Profiles for Portable Verified Identity Across Work and Trust Contexts

Background check provider Checkr has launched Profiles, a portable verified identity product that allows individuals to carry verified identity and credential information across employment, caregiving, marketplace, and other trust-dependent contexts.

The product creates a persistent verified identity record that individuals can reuse across multiple organizations and platforms, rather than undergoing separate identity verification and background screening processes for each new engagement. Checkr Profiles covers identity verification, criminal background checks, and professional credential validation.

The launch targets the growing gig economy, marketplace, and care economy sectors where workers and service providers frequently move between platforms and need to verify their identity and qualifications repeatedly. By making verified credentials portable, Checkr aims to reduce friction for individuals while maintaining trust and safety standards for the organizations that rely on them.

Checkr processes tens of millions of background checks annually for employers and platforms including major gig economy and technology companies. The Profiles product extends the company’s core screening business into a consumer-facing identity layer where individuals maintain ownership of their verified information.

The concept of portable or reusable verified identity has gained traction across the identity industry. The approach aligns with broader trends toward self-sovereign identity and verifiable credential frameworks that give individuals more control over their identity data while reducing duplicative verification processes.

For organizations, portable identity credentials could reduce onboarding time and verification costs while maintaining compliance with sector-specific screening requirements. The caregiving sector, where providers may work across multiple agencies and platforms, represents a particularly strong use case for credential portability.

Checkr said Profiles is designed to work alongside its existing enterprise background check products, allowing organizations to accept pre-verified credentials while retaining the option to run supplementary checks based on their specific requirements.
