CBP Uses Biometrics to Catch Criminal at Laredo Border

Biometric technology has led to the arrest of a fugitive at the Laredo land border in Texas. US Customs and Border Protection (CBP) identified the suspect after he was sent for a secondary inspection while entering the United States via the Colombia-Solidarity Bridge from Mexico.

During that secondary inspection, agents cross-referenced the man’s biometric information with various law enforcement databases, and found that he was wanted for the sexual assault of a child. The warrant was issued by the Dallas County Sheriff’s Office in Dallas, Texas, while the suspect is a 22-year old US citizen. Once CBP confirmed the warrant, he was taken into custody and transported to the Webb County Jail in Laredo to await further criminal processing.

“CBP plays an essential role in combatting this reprehensible crime by expanding our efforts to protect our nation’s children and holding alleged perpetrators accountable for their actions,” said Eugene Crawford, the Port Director at the Laredo Port of Entry.

The fugitive was attempting to cross the border on Tuesday, January 12. He is the second fugitive captured at the Laredo border in the past few months, after another man was identified with the help of Integrated Biometrics’ Kojak 10-print fingerprint scanner in July. Similarly, that man was wanted for the statutory rape of a child. CBP installed facial recognition technology at the Laredo border back in 2019.
