California has extended its mobile driver’s license program to Samsung Wallet, enabling residents to store and present a state-issued Mobile ID credential through Samsung’s digital wallet platform on Galaxy devices.
The expansion, supported by IDEMIA Public Security as the credentialing technology provider, makes California one of the first states to offer the mDL through Samsung Wallet. The credential allows holders to present their ID at participating locations using their smartphone, without needing to carry a physical card.
Governor Gavin Newsom highlighted the expansion as part of the state’s broader digital transformation agenda at the Department of Motor Vehicles. The California DMV began rolling out mobile driver’s licenses through Apple Wallet in 2024 and has since worked to extend the capability to additional platforms.
IDEMIA Public Security, which provides the backend credentialing infrastructure for the California Mobile ID, confirmed its role in supporting the Samsung Wallet integration. The company’s mobile ID platform handles the issuance, lifecycle management, and secure presentation of the digital credential.
The Samsung Wallet mDL uses ISO/IEC 18013-5, the international standard for mobile driving licenses, and supports both in-person and online identity verification scenarios. Residents can enroll by downloading Samsung Wallet on a compatible Galaxy device and following the credential provisioning process through the DMV’s existing mobile ID enrollment system.
Several U.S. states have been expanding mobile ID availability across platforms as digital wallet adoption grows. Samsung Wallet joins Apple Wallet and Google Wallet as a supported platform for state-issued mobile credentials in California.
More than 20 U.S. states now offer some form of mobile credential through at least one digital wallet platform.
