“…CaliBurger is ultimately aiming for wide rollout of biometric kiosks that can let customers pay for their orders via facial recognition, foregoing the need for payment cards or any other physical payment token.”
NEC is planning to demo its biometric retail technology at next week’s Retail’s Big Show event, and will get a helping hand from a California-based burger chain.
CaliBurger announced its embrace of biometrics toward the end of last year, when the chain revealed that it had started a pilot project in which customers could place their meal orders at automated kiosks designed to recognize their faces. The kiosks are designed provide personalized food options for known customers, and CaliBurger is ultimately aiming for wide rollout of biometric kiosks that can let customers pay for their orders via facial recognition, foregoing the need for payment cards or any other physical payment token.
The technology was, of course, provided by NEC, which has long been promoting the retail applications of its facial recognition technology. At Retail’s Big Show, representatives from both companies will show off the CaliBurger kiosks, as well as other sophisticated retail technologies pertaining to automated stock tracking and customer traffic analytics systems.
Retail’s Big Show is slated to run from January 14th to 16th in New York City.
