Breathalyzer Kiosk Leverages Biometric Authentication

A new breathalyzer solution for parole enforcement uses multimodal biometric recognition to identify its users.

Offered by Breathalytics, the solution is designed to let parole and probation officers to quickly ensure that their charges are sober, analyzing their breath for alcohol content after they breathe into a device using a disposable straw. To help ensure that the breath analyses accurately match their subjects, the kiosk also features Integrated Biometrics’ Watson Mini fingerprint sensor, which can scan two fingers at a time and meets FBI Appendix F requirements.

Explaining his firm’s selection of the Watson Mini for fingerprint authentication, Breathalytics CEO David Kreitzer said in a statement, “We needed a compact biometric sensor that’s extremely rugged and doesn’t need regular maintenance,” calling Integrated Biometrics’ solution “a perfect fit.”

Facial recognition, meanwhile, adds an extra layer of identity verification, while a second video camera in the device monitors the entire breath analysis process to provide documentary proof. Breathalytics is pitching the kiosk not only to parole and probation enforcement stakeholders but also to airlines and trucking firms that require staff to meet strict sobriety requirements for work.
