Viracopos International Airport in Campinas, Brazil has become the country’s first airport to implement a comprehensive biometric and automated passenger boarding system. The implementation, which began testing last month, includes automated access to restricted areas and boarding lounges, with a full rollout planned for the first half of 2025.
The technology deployment represents a collaboration between SITA, Digicon, and SERPRO. The system comprises 11 automated biometric e-Gates, with seven installed at restricted area entrances and four at boarding lounges serving both domestic and international flights. SITA’s involvement builds on its successful implementations worldwide.
Passengers can choose between traditional manual boarding pass scanning or the new biometric flow, which uses facial recognition technology. Those opting for biometric processing can register during check-in, with their registration remaining valid for up to five years. This approach reflects SERPRO’s broader efforts to enhance digital identity verification across Brazil, including its recent partnership with REACT-OnID for anti-fraud measures.
GOL will be the first airline to use the new equipment, with Azul scheduled to implement biometric boarding in 2025. The airport’s future plans include extending biometric authentication to security screening for concessionaires, baggage self-check-in via SITA Smart Path Bag Drop, and additional areas such as VIP lounges and Duty-Free stores.
“As the first airport in the world to deploy all three SITA biometric technologies, Viracopos Airport is leading the way in modernizing airport operations and positioning Brazil as a leader in digital innovation in air travel,” said SITA Americas President Shawn Gregor.
