Microsoft Extends Biometrics Push With Windows 10 Anniversary Update

Microsoft is launching its Windows 10 Anniversary Update next week, and with much fanfare.

One would think a free, comprehensive update wouldn’t need much promotion, but Microsoft is celebrating the launch with various offers including a free episode of Minecraft: Story Mode, up to four months of Groove Music Pass for free, and, inexplicably, a free rental of the 2003 hit comedy School of Rock. It’s also offering special promotions for devices from hardware partners such as PC maker Dell, whose XPS 15 laptop is tailored for Windows 10 compatibility.

While many will appreciate these offers, the Anniversary Update is likely to appeal to users in its own right, with numerous special features and tweaks including the Windows Ink stylus app hub and a much smarter Cortana AI assistant. One of the most important improvements concerns the Windows Hello security system, which relies heavily on biometric authentication: With the new update, the system is being integrated into apps, and into websites via the Microsoft Edge browser.

Windows 10 is now installed on over 350 million devices, making Microsoft one of the major propagators and proselytizers of biometric security. And as users download the free Windows 10 Anniversary Update after its release on August 2nd, that will be even more the case.
