Worcester, Massachusetts’ Registry of Motor Vehicles is going to be getting self-serve kiosks that use biometric authentication technology, according to an article by the Worcester Telegram & Gazette’s Steven H. Foskett Jr. It’s part of an effort to reduce notoriously long wait times at the Worcester RMV, and the kiosks will be installed at the start of 2015.
The terminals will use facial recognition technology to scan users’ faces, thereby authenticating their identities for the purposes of license or ID renewal. The technology will also be able to detect when users’ faces are obfuscated – by hair, for example, or a hat – and the kiosk will then advise users about such issues. The automation of this kind of service, which biometric technology has made possible, will allow RMV staff to direct their efforts towards issues that require more in-depth customer service.
It’s part of a growing trend of biometrics technology creeping into everyday social life; the same kind of technology is already being used to analyze athletes’ movements during sporting events, to monitor audience laughter at comedy clubs, and even to unlock mobile phones.
