Last week at FindBiometrics National ID Month continued with a look at how the UNHCR is deploying biometrics around the world to serve and protect millions of forcibly displaced persons in what is commonly being referred to as a global refugee crisis. We also announced the National ID Month Webinar, for which registration is now open. Fraud and its Prevention
Biometrics have a number of applications when it comes to mitigating fraud and last week we published two items that highlighted very different aspects on the anti-fraud spectrum. Socure added facial recognition technology to its behavioral biometrics platform and a city in the Philippines is using biometrics to weed out ghost workers on its municipal payroll.

In healthcare news last week we reported on a Naval hospital in the United States that is integrating Corvus’ SWFT (Secure Web Fingerprint Transmission) system for ID purposes. Meanwhile, we heard news from NuData, which is aiming its behavioral biometrics at the healthcare vertical.

In mobility last week we saw Crossmatch winning a GSN award for its Verifier Sentry handheld device and a major order of Precise Biometrics’ Tactivo units by the US Navy. As far as smartphones are concerned, we heard some rosy predictions regarding the sales of the newest iPhones (which sport second gen Touch ID) and got our first glimpse of Xaiomi’s upcoming flagship handset, which will once again feature biometric authentication.

Lloyds Banking Group began supporting Apple Pay last week while Android Pay began rolling out across the US. That said, the biggest news in biometrics and finance last week was Visa’s introduction of a new specification concerning biometric EMV chips.

Conference Season
As we enter the fall so do we also find ourselves surrounded by industry conferences. This week FindBiometrics will be attending the Global Identity Summit in Tampa, Flrodia, where we’ve been promised the launch of a new video analytics system from Morpho (Safran). Corvus will be showcasing its FaceCube solution there too. Unisys was at the Americas Analyst and Advisor Summit in Dallas last week where it launched an upgraded product line, including a service based security platform featuring multimodal biometrics.

Speaking of multiple modalities, last week brought its share of face, voice, iris and eye vein recognition news. EyeVerify shared the results of three independent studies demonstrating the accuracy of its Eyeprint ID solutions, while iris biometrics specialist Tascent announced that it rose $18.5 million in series A funding. Rumors surfaced regarding the potential of Siri having voice recognition on the new Apple iOS 9 and we also reported on a consumer facing facial reciogntion powered door lock.
