European payment and transaction services company Worldline has announced that it will be debuting its new ‘pay by face’ system at the National Retail Federation Expo in New York later this month.
The biometric payment system was developed by Swiss cyber-security startup OneVisage, the winner of Worldline’s e-Payments Challenge, which was held in mid-September in Frankfurt.
The Challenge, which involved 25 financial services technology startups and took place over three days, saw companies compete on 15 challenges set by 11 Worldline clients to come up with solutions using Worldline assets.
In a statement about the pay-with-your-face system, Worldline said that it uses “3D facial biometry and respects the users’ data privacy, giving them back the full control of the biometry unlike all other alternatives on the market”.
Speaking after being named winners of the e-payments Challenge back in September, Christophe Remillet, CEO of OneVisage, said, “Our vision is to disrupt the payments industry by introducing 3D facial biometric solutions that consumers can totally control.”
Facial biometric payment systems are increasing in popularity around the globe. Just this past November, Spain’s CaixaBank partnered with a Nestle grocery store in Barcelona for a trial of a new facial payment system aimed at speeding up customer transactions in advance of the holiday season.
