Unisys has renewed its contract with the Queensland Department of Transport and Main Roads (TMR) to facilitate the creation of secure biometric driver’s licenses, marine licenses, and accreditations. The two organizations first joined forces back in 2009, and TMR has issued more than 4.5 million smart licenses to Queensland residents in the decade since.
Now that the contract has been renewed, Unisys will be upgrading the TMR system with its Stealth(identity) identity management and authentication platform, which debuted in March. Unisys will specifically be providing facial recognition capture devices and Facial Signature Image Processing, which will allow TMR to register people’s facial biometrics biometrics and authenticate them based on that information. That, in turn, will allow them to verify people’s identities when they renew or apply for a driver’s license and lower the risk of identity fraud.
“Queensland TMR will use Stealth(identity) to help prevent fake or fraudulent licenses from being issued and protect citizens’ identities,” said Unisys APAC General Manager and VP Rick Mayhew. “At the same time, moving to a cloud-based subscription solution will help increase flexibility to reduce operational costs for the department.”
The Stealth(Identity) solution also includes customizable APIs that will allow the Australian state to incorporate biometric authentication into various physical and digital channels. Unisys itself will provide technical support services and software updates for the duration of the subscription, and will not store any personal information on its own servers.
Unisys has recently been emphasizing the importance of digital security, while researchers elsewhere in Australia, in the country’s Department of Defense, have developed their own long-range facial recognition algorithm.
