Norwegian Air Deploys Vision-Box eGates at LAX

Another Scandinavian airline has introduced biometric boarding at Los Angeles International Airport (LAX). Norwegian Air has teamed up with Vision-Box to allow passengers to board flights using a facial recognition scan for authentication.

The Vision-Box biometric eGates have been in use since a July 11^th Norwegian Air flight from Los Angeles to Barcelona. Vision-Box’s technology boasts one of the NIST’s top facial recognition algorithms, and eliminates the need for a paper boarding pass while travelers are moving through the airport.   

“Reducing carbon footprint and sustainability matter to us,” said Norwegian Air Managing Director Bjørn Erik Barman-Jenssen. “Adopting paperless boarding with biometric technology is the right step for our environment, and will create a seamless experience, which will in turn attract more eco-conscious consumers to our airline.”

The news comes shortly after Vision-Box formed a similar partnership with Finnair. Other Vision-Box customers at LAX include Air France, British Airways, Cathay Pacific, KLM, Korean Air, Lufthansa, Qantas, and Singapore Airlines, making Norwegian Air the tenth airline to adopt the platform.

Vision-Box also provides biometric authentication technology for numerous airports all over the world, with the company announcing the launch of another paperless boarding program at Kempegowda International Airport in Bengaluru, India, earlier today.
