Hawkeye Highlights Role of Facial Recognition in SOCOM Operations

Hawkeye Systems is highlighting the role biometric technology played in the United States Special Operations Command (SOCOM) raid that resulted in the death of Islamic State leader Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi. Al-Baghdadi was identified through a combination of facial recognition and DNA analysis, while live surveillance feeds provided real-time time updates to military leaders and informed decisions during the operation.

According to Hawkeye, the use of live cameras and AI helps distinguish civilians from legitimate threats, and reduces the danger that soldiers face during high-risk operations. The optical imaging specialist currently has a research and development agreement with the US Department of Defense, and is working to develop better targeting and recon technology.

“We are pleased to see the military leveraging camera technology with the use of facial recognition software,” said Hawkeye Founder and CEO Corby Marshall. “We also expect that our ability to provide virtual presence and AI-enabled holographic imaging will have various new applications military and otherwise.”

Hawkeye is the developer of an AXA camera system that provides users with a 360-degree field of view and comes equipped with volumetric and light field capture capabilities to facilitate the collection of high quality data.

The news demonstrates that biometric technology is playing an increasingly important role in global military operations. Earlier this year, SOCOM announced that it was searching for a technology partner to create a touchless fingerprint app, while the Australian Department of Defense has developed its own long range facial recognition algorithm.
