Fingerprint Cards (FPC) has announced that it will be providing the fingerprint sensor for a new smart luggage product from the French company Kabuto. The product in question is intended as a carry-on suitcase, which can be unlocked with a fingerprint recognition scan and does not rely on a key or a passcode for security.
FPC did not indicate which one of its sensors would be appearing in the luggage.
Of course, Kabuto is not the only luggage company using biometrics to enhance the security of its various offerings. Plevo recently Kickstarted a line of smart duffel bags and backpacks with fingerprint recognition tech, while Hampton products released a new TSA-approved BenjiLock that can be opened by airport security without damaging the lock itself. BIO-key previously unveiled a similar travel padlock back in 2017.
The Kabuto deal falls outside of FPC’s typical smart card and smartphone purview, but it is worth noting that this is not the company’s first foray into the smart luggage industry. FPC has already provided fingerprint technology for a biometric suitcase from the Chinese brand 90FUN. 90FUN is an ecosystem partner of Xiaomi, which placed FPC’s side-mounted FPC1540 fingerprint sensor in its new Redmi K30 smartphone earlier this month.
