FIS has launched a new 3-D Secure (3DS) payment authentication service in anticipation of the stricter Strong Customer Authentication (SCA) requirements that will soon be going into effect in Europe and the UK. The 3DS Flex platform was built with Worldpay’s payment technology, and arrives shortly after FIS acquired Worldpay’s merchant business.
3DS Flex was designed to streamline the online shopping process and reduce the number of digital shopping carts that get abandoned. It allows digital merchants to verify the identities of cardholders, and offers support for biometric authentication techniques like face and fingerprint recognition. It also monitors factors like device, location, and shopper history to provide an additional layer of passive identity verification. The solution is compatible with all existing 3DS protocols, including 3DS1, 3DS2.1, and the new 3DS2.2.
3DS Flex is able to assess the risk level of any transaction, and will allow the customer to forego extra authentication steps if they are dealing with a trusted provider or the transaction itself is deemed to be low risk. Since different banks use different forms of authentication when processing payments, 3DS Flex will automatically switch to the optimal form of authentication for the bank associated with each card.

According to FIS, 3DS Flex is the first payment solution that is compatible with the 3DS2.2 standards. Worldpay, meanwhile, previously released a FraudSight platform that analyzes user behavior to evaluate risk based on prior transactions. The 3DS Flex platform should further the former company’s efforts to improve the safety and the utility of mobile payment technologies.
