FIME has officially become the latest organization accredited to test biometric components as part of the FIDO Alliance’s Biometric Component Certification Program. The Program was first unveiled back in 2018 to evaluate the integrity of individual biometric parts, and to ensure that they are able to withstand Presentation Attacks.
“The Biometric Component Certification Program is the first of its kind in the industry,” said FIDO Certification Director Rae Hayward. “Support from testing experts such as FIME is invaluable to the continued success and adoption of our standards and, in turn, moving us closer to our goal of removing reliance on server-side passwords to authenticate users.”
So far, the number of components certified through the program has been relatively limited. The Qualcomm ultrasonic in-display fingerprint sensor in the Galaxy S10 was the first part to receive FIDO certification, and Cirrus Logic is the only other company to make it through the testing process so far.
The FIME accreditation should help the FIDO Alliance process new components more quickly. The organization indicated that it had accredited two new independent testing labs in its most recent batch of certifications, although it’s unclear if FIME is one of those facilities.
Either way, FIME now stands alongside the other labs that have been accredited through the program, including the iBeta Quality Assurance lab in Colorado, the Idiap Research Institute in Switzerland, and the ELITT/Leti CEA site in France. FIME has also been accredited to test fingerprint authentication solutions on behalf of Mastercard, and is hoping that the partnership with FIDO will allow the company to advance its portfolio of biometric services.
“Expanding our existing biometric offering is an important strategic move for us,” said FIME VP of Services Stephanie El Rhomri. “FIDO is leading biometric authentication standardization efforts and we’re proud to be sharing our support and expertise to advance its success.”
