“…there’s a side-mounted fingerprint sensor on each side of the device, so that no matter which way a user is holding it, they’re still able to perform biometric authentication intuitively.”
ZTE-owned mobile brand Nubia has taken a different tack with its latest flagship smartphone: the Nubia Z20 features two screens and two fingerprint sensors.
The Janus-like approach is premised on the idea of turning the rear of the smartphone into a screen, and thereby eliminating the need for a notch or bezels to house cameras and other sensors on the front-facing part of the device. Users can take a selfie simply by turning the device over and using its extra screen to angle the rear-facing camera as needed.
Accordingly, there’s a side-mounted fingerprint sensor on each side of the device, so that no matter which way a user is holding it, they’re still able to perform biometric authentication intuitively.
It isn’t clear which biometrics specialist provided the fingerprint sensors themselves. Sweden-based Fingerprint Cards has provided sensors for multiple Nubia smartphones in the past, but the Z20 is not currently listed in the mobile integrations “ticker” on Fingerprint’s website.
Other technical specifications of the new device, which launched in China in mid-August, include a Snapdragon 855 Plus chip, a 4,000mAh battery, and a three-camera configuration of 48MP, 16MP, and 8MP lenses. The front display is a curved, 6.42″ AMOLED screen, while the rear is a 5.1″ AMOLED screen.
Nubia has announced that its new flagship device will become available in North America, the UK, and Europe starting on October 14th, with consumers able to order the smartphone through its website.
