“The Guide’s publication reflects the increasingly widespread proliferation of biometric technologies across government and business organizations…”
The Biometrics Institute has issued a new, freely available guide to the implementation of biometric technology in an organizations.
The guide, entitled Understanding Biometrics – Considerations for Implementing a Biometric System, is broad in its approach, covering a variety of topics including how to determine a given organization’s biometric needs, choosing the right modality, and assessing security vulnerabilities. In keeping with a theme that the Biometrics Institute picked up a couple of years ago in its Biometrics Privacy Guidelines, the new guide also takes into account privacy and security considerations.
Developed with input from the Biometrics Institute’s Technology Innovation Expert Group and outside biometrics professionals, the guide is definitely “not a policy document,” and “is by no means an exhaustive manual”, in the words of Biometrics Institute CEO Isabelle Moeller in a statement; rather, it is designed to “include the basics” and serve “as guiding material for those who are not the experts.”
It’s also meant to evolve over time, with the Biometrics Institute planning to update it every two years.
The Guide’s publication reflects the increasingly widespread proliferation of biometric technologies across government and business organizations, just as the United Nations’ recent publication of a best practices guide for using biometrics in counter-terrorism reflects the increasing use of such technologies in those applications. Accordingly, Moeller says it’s the product of “strong demand” from Biometrics Institute members, who will likely be eager to follow its evolution going forward.
