The Biometrics Institute unveiled the agenda for one of its key events of the year.
Scheduled for October 22-23 in London, the Biometrics Institute Congress will address critical issues surrounding artificial intelligence and facial recognition technologies, particularly as the UK considers expanding their use in law enforcement and Germany examines new regulatory measures. The event will focus on the implications of the EU AI Act on biometrics and the broader future of these technologies.
Recent industry surveys conducted by the Biometrics Institute reveal a strong correlation between public perception of AI and their acceptance of biometric technologies. An overwhelming 80 percent of respondents believe that public opinion on AI will significantly influence views on biometrics, underscoring the need to address public concerns to build trust in these applications.
The Congress will highlight the growing prominence of facial recognition and multimodal biometrics, with nearly half of the survey respondents having predicted an increase in the use of facial biometrics. The event will also feature discussions on the responsible use of these technologies, the real risks associated with AI and facial recognition, and strategies for building public trust and transparency.
Key stakeholders, including representatives from the UK Information Commissioner’s Office, the US Department of Justice, the European Commission, and civil rights organizations such as Big Brother Watch, will engage in discussions on biometric strategies, regulation, and good practices. The Congress aims to create a safe space for open and honest dialogue, with the goal of guiding decision-makers on the responsible innovation and implementation of biometric technologies.
The Congress will operate under the Chatham House Rule, which ensures that participants can speak freely without their statements being directly attributed to them outside the conference. This approach is designed to foster a candid exchange of ideas and concerns among experts and stakeholders.
