Heathrow Airport and British Airways are preparing to introduce automated passenger processing based on biometric facial recognition.
The system will be introduced at Terminal 5 of the airport, with three gates employing the technology to compare live scans of passengers’ faces to those in their passports. Initially, the system will be used for domestic flights, but authorities plan to expand it to international flights, and plan to get an additional 33 biometric gates in operation in the near term.
The biometric gates will complement self-service luggage checking systems already in place, with authorities aiming to improve the customer processing experience.
The development arrives amid recent news of authorities in Canada, Iceland and the United States working to implement biometric screening systems at airports in those countries, part of a larger trend that has seen the technology grow increasingly popular around the world.
