Iris scanning specialist Delta ID is heralding the rise of automotive biometrics. In a guest post on VentureBeat, the company’s CEO, Dr. Salil Prabhakar, argues that, with biometric technology having become mainstream on mobile devices, it’s now “coming to a connected car near you.”
Prabhakar points out that biometric technology is uniquely capable in offering driver authentication, and moreover that this application isn’t just for protecting a driver’s car against theft. Ride-hailing services like Uber could use the technology to ensure that only authorized drivers are behind the wheel during working hours, while digital payment platforms like Apple Pay and Samsung Pay, which use biometric authentication on mobile devices, could similarly use it when they’re integrated with connected cars; meanwhile the car insurance industry is “rapidly moving towards using biometric driver authentication” to offer personally tailored insurance rates. The technology can also be used to automatically adjust car settings based on who is in the driver’s seat.
Delta ID’s technology is already finding its way toward such applications, with an iris-scanning solution based in the car’s rear-view mirror having been showcased at last month’s Consumer Electronics Show. And now that the company is being acquired by Fingerprint Cards, a biometrics giant that has been eager to move into the automotive sector, Delta ID’s efforts in this area could shift into a higher gear.
