A computer vision and biometrics expert will head up a new computer science school at Indiana University. Mohamed Abdel-Mottaleb has been appointed as the founding chair of the new Department of Computer Science at the Indiana University Luddy School of Informatics, Computing and Engineering in Indianapolis, starting this fall.
Abdel-Mottaleb has contributed significantly to 3D face and ear recognition, biometric recognition, visual tracking, and medical image processing. He previously served as professor and chair of the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering at the University of Miami’s College of Engineering.
At the Luddy School, Abdel-Mottaleb will also hold the prestigious Luddy Professorship, the first on the Indianapolis campus. IU Indianapolis Chancellor Latha Ramchand highlighted the importance of Abdel-Mottaleb’s appointment, noting Indiana’s emergence as a hub of technological innovation.
“He will bring the vision and leadership to create a strong computer science program in Indianapolis that will foster a robust talent pipeline for these industries and set up our students for career success,” she said.
The program will offer Bachelor of Science, Bachelor of Arts, Master of Science, and Ph.D. degrees in computer science, beginning in the fall semester. It will provide an interdisciplinary and hands-on approach to education in high-demand areas such as cybersecurity, artificial intelligence, software engineering, human-centered computing, and sensor networks.
Abdel-Mottaleb was previously a principal member of the research staff at Philips Research and contributing to the development of the MPEG-7 standard for multimedia description. His research has been funded by numerous industries and federal agencies, including the National Science Foundation and the FBI. His expertise is expected to advance the interdisciplinary research mission of IU Indianapolis, particularly in the fields of biomedical imaging and biometrics.
