NZ Authorities Test Family-Focused Biometric Screening Solution at Christchurch Airport

New Zealand Customs is testing out a new biometric traveler screening system developed by Safran Identity & Security at Christchurch Airport.

The solution is designed to extend automated, biometric traveler screening to kids under 12 and individuals with special needs. It’s based on facial recognition, and its cameras are designed to scan individuals between one and 2.1 meters in height. It also features a touchscreen interface designed to let travelers quickly answer standard questions from border authorities.

While automatic, biometric passenger screening terminals are quickly spreading around the world, they generally can’t be used by children or assisted travelers. Thus Safran Identity & Security’s new solution could fill a gap in the market, if its testing at Christchurch Airport proves successful.

For the company, that could prove particularly advantageous in New Zealand, with the country’s government seeking to enhance its border screening capabilities with new technologies in a bid to keep up with rising tourism, and Safran Identity & Security already having established itself as a key vendor in such efforts.
