Vancouver International Airport (YVR) will deploy 90 new biometric kiosks this spring.
Dubbed “BorderXpress”, the kiosks are aimed at helping the airport to comply with the Primary Inspection Kiosk (PIK) program, the Canada Border Service Agency’s new effort to expand automated traveler screening in the country. The kiosks will allow users to scan their passports, and use facial recognition to compare their live faces to the biometric data in their documents.
Travelers will still need to face CBSA agents for final inspections, but YVR says that the BorderXpress kiosks will decrease the overall passenger processing times, improving the passenger experience while enhancing security. Once in action, the kiosks will be used to process the majority of incoming international travelers.
The deployment follows soon after news that the Ottawa International Airport in the nation’s capital will also use biometric kiosks to process incoming travelers. As in YVR’s case, individuals will use the kiosk to perform their declarations, and have the option of filling the forms in advance using a mobile app.
