The Steak ‘n Shake restaurant chain has become the latest to embrace PopID’s biometric payments system, announcing plans to deploy it at select locations in Orlando. PopID Check will let customers register for a face-based sign-in system to let them access their loyalty rewards and see their past orders, while the PopPay system will let them purchase a meal with a face scan, and with no need to present cash, a card, or any other hardware token.
Based in Los Angeles, PopID is a majority-owned subsidiary of Cali Group. The PopPay platform was first implemented and proven out in Cali Group’s portfolio companies — Kitchen United and CaliBurger.
Steak ‘n Shake, for its part, says it plans to roll out the system to over 300 locations after its Orlando debut. Steak ‘n Shake is a diner-style fast food restaurant known for its Steakburgers made from T-Bone, sirloin, and round stakes. Founded in February 1934 in Normal, Illinois by Gus Belt, the chain has locations primarily in the Midwestern United States with locations also in the South, Mid-Atlantic and Western United States, Europe, and the Middle East.
“Our partnership with PopID is a key part of our effort to provide guests with a fast and seamless ordering experience,” said Steak ‘n Shake’s Chief Information Officer, Keith Correia. “When using PopID Check In, a guest does not need to use their phone or take out their wallet as part of the ordering process. They will automatically be checked in for loyalty rewards, and they can choose to make an automated payment with PopPay… Ordering at Steak n Shake has never been easier or more convenient.”
The restaurant follows Los Angeles’s Pho Banh Mi Che Cali chain’s launch of PopID’s palm-scanning payment system in April of this year.
