Biometric Payments Platform Partners with Romanian Financial Services Provider

PayByFace has formed a partnership with the financial services provider Up Romania. The alliance will allow PayByFace users to use the naked payments platform to purchase goods and services from any Up Romania affiliates.

With PayByFace, customers must first use a mobile app to link a payment card, a selfie, and a PIN code to their account. After that, they will able to submit to a facial recognition scan to verify purchases with participating retailers. PayByFace is hoping to place its biometric readers in more than 500 stores in Romania before the end of 2021.

“Up Romania has committed to a broad digitization process meant to offer our customers a simplified experience in using the cards issued by our company,” said Up Romania GM and Up Group Regional Manager Elena Pap. “In addition to creating opportunities for online payments in as many stores as possible, we want them to have at hand fast and safe means of payment.”

The interest in contactless payment solutions has gone up dramatically since the onset of COVID-19. Up Romania customers can already use Apple Pay to pay with their phones, but the PayByFace utility will take that one step further and allow people to ditch the phone and pay with only their face at the point of sale. Up Romania is also planning to launch an e-wallet that will enable direct payments through the Up Mobil app.

The news comes shortly after PayByFace appointed Sreejit Ankarath to its Advisory Board. The solution itself is one of several naked payments schemes to emerge in the past few years. SnapPay is currently working to bring face-based payments to North America, while PopID has now deployed its PopPay platform at several restaurant establishments in Southern California. Panasonic has also agreed to integrate PopPay into its ClearConnect Kiosk application.
