Delta Air Lines has officially launched a biometric passenger processing system at the Hartsfield–Jackson Atlanta International Airport.
It is of course, a product of Delta’s collaboration with the US Customs and Border Protection agency, and an expansion of the latter’s biometric border screening program. But it’s also a collaboration with other airlines, namely Aeromexico, Air France-KLM, and Virgin Atlantic, with customers of all of these carriers able to take advantage of the biometric processing system.
The system has been implemented in Terminal F of the airport, in the form of 46 biometric check-in kiosks, 54 counters supporting biometric baggage drop, and 12 biometric security gates. In keeping with the CBP’s larger biometric airport security program, all of these automated systems use facial recognition technology to confirm the identities of travelers.
In a press release, Delta asserted that initial tests of the system have found a savings of nine minutes per flight. And given that 1.9 million travelers depart ATL’s Terminal F each year via Delta Air Lines or its partner carriers, that should add up to some considerable time savings as more travelers take advantage of the new biometric processing system.
