The Alabama Department of Revenue is going to test out MorphoTrust‘s e-ID solution for this season’s tax filing. The pilot program will allow participating Alabamans to file their taxes online using MorphoTrust’s mobile ID solution for iOS.
The app uses facial recognition to authenticate users, comparing smartphone images of their state-issued ID documents to selfie photos via biometric matching. As such it offers online authentication applications, offering greater convenience for users and stronger security compared to password-based systems. As Alabama Department of Revenue Commissioner Julie P. Magee explains in a statement announcing the pilot project, “There are no usernames or passwords; only a person’s photo can unlock the e-ID, making it secure and easy-to-use.”
MorphoTrust’s state cooperation suggests growing traction for its mobile ID solutions, with the Iowa state government having worked with the company to test a mobile driver license concept last summer. As for its e-ID solution for tax-filing, Alabamans who try it out will be entitled to priority processing of their tax filings, which could help to foster some positive results.
