The first smartphones with Fingerprint Cards’ (FPC) new side-mounted fingerprint sensor have finally hit the market. Customers will be able to find the FPC1542 in the Redmi K40, K40 Pro, and K40 Pro+ smartphones from Xiaomi.
The FPC1542 was released in November, and was designed specifically with an eye toward borderless devices. The curved, capacitive sensor can be integrated into a button that serves another purpose, such as a power button or the volume control, to support a more seamless visual aesthetic. The FPC1542 is an updated version of the company’s original FPC1540 side-mounted sensor, which appeared in the Redmi K30. The older sensor was released in 2019, and was also featured in the Infinix Note 7 Lite and the Vsmart Aris and Aris Pro.
“We’re excited to see our innovative technology in this launch in a new segment of curved capacitive fingerprint sensors,” said FPC Mobile Business Line SVP Ted Hansson. “Yet again we’ve been chosen by Xiaomi and continue our strong and long-term relation with an industry leader.”
FPC fingerprint sensors have now been featured in more than 500 different smartphone models. However, the company is looking to diversify its portfolio, and has argued that banks will generate more business if they start offering biometric payment cards.
