“The technology will be used by the jointly-developed service to verify the age of individuals in the UK seeking to access adult websites.”
BioID has teamed up with Swiss blockchain specialist Pikcio to develop an age verification service based on facial recognition.
The latter technology comes by way of BioID, which upgraded its BWS solution with a liveness detection capability early this year. The technology will be used by the jointly-developed service to verify the age of individuals in the UK seeking to access adult websites.
Pikcio’s role will be to anonymize the process. In a statement, the firm’s CEO, Didier Collin de Casaubon, explained, “We will simply store tokens of the data we have verified,” adding, “The user logging on to an age-restricted site has the option to make the token reusable and thus does not have to go through the verification process each time.”
In their announcement, the companies did not offer a timeline for the launch of their age verification service. But with regulatory schemes increasingly encouraging the use of biometric technology to confirm the identities of individuals in online transactions, and mandating reliable age verification for explicit websites in the UK, the joint solution could meet a ready market when it arrives.
