Florida-based Bio-Metrica has announced a new biometric identity management platform. Called the Biometric Identification Infrastructure, or BII, it’s a web-based framework that can keep track of various biometric and non-biometric data.
The company has gone for a comprehensive approach. BII is able to keep track of biometric face, iris, speech, signature, iris, and vein data, among other measures; but it can also track non-biometric identification data from sources like passwords, tokens, and smart cards. Its modular design means that the data types can vary even within databases, but it can also be programmed to have certain data types be designated mandatory. And it can integrate existing applications or set up as a standalone framework.
BII can be used on a range of devices, from PCs to mobile phones, and it’s also highly scalable. It is capable of splitting processing between server and client systems, so for particularly large databases it can search through thousands or millions of records more quickly, since it isn’t required to do all the processing centrally. While it’s designed for a variety of applications, it’s easy to imagine such a system’s utility in managing large databases of employees, or administrating a huge voter registration system.
BII is currently available for a 30-day free trial, and Bio-Metrica says one of its goals is to keep the system affordable beyond that.
