“Today’s announcement represents a major step in addressing the extensive and growing opportunity for large-scale identification, enterprise and consumer security in one of the largest and fastest growing economic regions of the world.” – Mike DePasquale, Chairman &CEO, BIO-key
BIO-key has made a breakthrough in its push into Africa, announcing a $30 million contract to provide a biometric authentication platform for a Nigerian telecommunications company.
The fingerprint authentication specialist first hinted at its ambitions for the market last autumn when it announced that the Technology Transfer Institute of Africa (TTI) had joined its Channel Alliance Partner program. Shortly after that, BIO-key revealed that it had established a new subsidiary in Nigeria, BIO-key Africa.
Now, BIO-key Africa and TTI are working in collaboration with domestic partner Chams PLC, an identity solutions provider, to bring a flexible and secure biometric authentication platform that their unnamed telecom client can use for employee authentication.
“Recognizing the opportunity to bring cost-effective solutions to the African market, over the past six months, BIO-key opened a subsidiary in Africa and began actively pursuing several opportunities,” explained BIO-key CEO Mike DePasquale. “Today’s announcement represents a major step in addressing the extensive and growing opportunity for large-scale identification, enterprise and consumer security in one of the largest and fastest growing economic regions of the world.”
DePasquale added that Nigeria is the seventh most populous country in the world, with a population of more than 206 million.
For Chams PLC’s part, Group Managing Director Gavin Young praised BIO-key for its “secure, user-friendly and attractively priced alternatives to passwords, PINs, tokens and security cards,” which will surely be appreciated by the end client and its employees as well.
