This week has brought a wide range of stories from across the biometrics industry, but FindBiometrics readers were most interested in some big strategic moves from industry leaders, and some deep dives into particular biometric technologies.
On the strategic front, AnyVision made a splash this week with its news of a major rebrand – the company is now called Oosto – and a partnership with Carnegie Mellon University’s CyLab Biometric Research Center. It’s all part of a broader strategic shift on the company’s part, with AnyVision’s leadership explaining that they want to expand their offerings beyond security-focused facial recognition into new applications powered by sophisticated computer vision technology:

The industry’s other big maneuver came from another facial recognition specialist, Onfido. The company got a lot of attention with its announcement that it had acquired EYN, a firm pioneering a unique approach to liveness detection based on emitting audible and ultrasonic wavelengths from a device:

Speaking of liveness detection, this was a key focus in a guest post from HID Global’s Roland Fournier this week. The Senior Director of HID Biometrics Business Unit’s Product & Solutions, Fournier stoked reader interest with his discussion of the critical importance of fending off presentation attacks, the most serious threat to otherwise highly capable biometric technologies:
Not All Biometric Authentication Is Created Equal
Readers also flocked to another in-depth look into biometric tech, this time concerning fingerprint sensors. This sector took a beating during the COVID-19 pandemic as health experts warned against touching shared surfaces and contactless solutions came into favor, but analysts are still projecting solid growth for the fingerprint sensor market going forward – and for good reason, as this feature explains:
Why Are People Still Buying Fingerprint Sensors?
And finally, a blast from the past. We reported on VSBLTY’s involvement in the Infrastructure-as-a-Service startup Austin GIS back in early September, but the news got a spike of interest this week. And it remains interesting news: VSBLTY is a computer vision specialist with a strong interest in the emerging smart city sector that Austin GIS is targeting:
