After a successful two-week test phase, Berlin Brandenburg Airport (BER) has officially launched its facial recognition service, BER Biometrics, for passengers departing from Terminal 1. The new contactless service aims to enhance the passenger experience by allowing travelers to navigate the terminal without needing to show their boarding passes at various checkpoints.
Passengers can use BER Biometrics at two self-service kiosks on the departures level, the entrance to a control lane for the BER runway, and a column in front of the Tegel lounge. The app provider deletes the matching data after the flight, while the stored passenger data remains in the app, which users can manage independently at any time.
Passengers can register via the SmartDepart app provided by AirSphere, submitting a selfie, and then having their live image taken on-site at designated stations in the terminal. The app then matches the images to activate the BER Biometrics service.
“AirSphere and Berlin Brandenburg Airport have been working together successfully for many years in the automation of passenger handling processes.” said Frank Pfleiderer, Managing Director of AirSphere. “We are delighted to have BER as the first customer for our new SmartDepart app and offer passengers at BER a new travel experience. We shall continue to expand the range of services in the app and will soon be offering corresponding services via the app at other airports.”
“BER Biometrics is a free service for interested passengers and is entirely voluntary,” added Thomas Hoff Andersson, Managing Director of Operations at BER. “The digital service enables them to plan and organize their stay at the airport more effectively. Thanks to contactless access to various process locations, users can reach their departure gate more conveniently and quickly. For the airport company, BER Biometrics is another building block toward a smart airport of the future.”
The BER Biometrics service is free and voluntary for passengers aged 16 and over. Although it replaces the need to present a boarding pass, passengers must still carry official travel documents, and all services at BER Airport can still be accessed without using BER Biometrics.
