The Bank of Cyprus’s pioneering biometric bank cards initiative is using fingerprint sensors provided by Sweden-based Fingerprint Cards, the latter has announced.
It’s a project spearheaded by Gemalto, which announced near the start of this month that Bank of Cyprus customers would be among the first in the world to benefit from biometric payment card technology. Zwipe then revealed its role in the project as a provider of the banking cards’ energy harvesting technology as well as the biometric engine upon which they rely. The latter presumably refers to the software component of the cards’ biometric scanning, with FPC now revealing that a sensor from its FPC1300 series is being used in the biometric cards as well.
In a statement announcing its involvement in the project, Fingerprint Cards pointed to significant enthusiasm over emerging biometric payment card technologies, asserting, “The interest from banks for or introducing biometrics on card is high, and there are multiple market pilots planned in the world throughout this year as the eco-system is preparing for commercial volume launches.”
FPC added that it “is pleased to have the widest footprint in this prospering market with its proven leading edge biometric performance and low power consumption.”
The company’s announcement comes amid IDEX’s news that it expects to have its own biometric smart card sensor certified for ISO cards in Q2 of this year, pointing to a breadth of activity in this emerging market ahead of major commercial launches.
