Azerbaijan is looking to advance its digital transformation by implementing digital IDs through its “mygov” platform, as announced by the country’s Innovation and Digital Development Agency (IDDA). The initiative aims to attract startups and tech companies, particularly from India and other countries, to foster a dynamic exchange of ideas and expand Azerbaijan’s digital potential.
The move is complemented by a series of amendments signed into law by the President to refine regulations concerning identity, personal information, and data protection, aligning with international standards.
The new digital ID system allows citizens to access and share identity documentation through the mygov platform, eliminating the need for physical ID cards. The digital documentation will hold the same legal weight as traditional ID cards and includes birth, marriage, and death certificates.
This effort benefits businesses by reducing the need for physical ID verification and minimizing paper usage.
As part of its digital strategy, Azerbaijan has launched several initiatives, including a unified login platform for over 140 electronic services, a National Information Exchange system called Digital Bridge, a paperless government initiative (RSD), a Chief Digital Transformation Officer program for government employees, and the establishment of a Cybersecurity Center.
Azerbaijan’s recent success in digitization was highlighted at the recent GSMA M360 Eurasia 2024 international conference held in Baku. Deputy Minister of Digital Development and Transport, Samir Mammadov, revealed that 65 percent of Azerbaijan’s population was already using digital IDs. Mammadov also noted significant progress in digital infrastructure, with 90 percent of households in Baku having access to broadband fiber optic internet and 74 percent national coverage.
Additionally, 500 small and medium-sized businesses are receiving support for their digitization efforts, highlighting the role of digitalization in economic development and service accessibility.
